Cool Little Desktop Support Gadget
By Oliver Rist | March 5, 2007, 2:11 pm
Did a quickie on this for SMB IT. Had to fall back onto it during the StorCenter-where’s-all-my-data crisis. It’s basically a Windows-to-Windows USB 2.0 file transfer utility all wrapped up in hardware.
The device coils a double-ended USB cable. Plug one into PC A and the other into PC B. The file transfer utility is embedded in the device and automatically pops up on both PCs–nothing gets installed, however. Now both PCs are showing a windows with their own disk tree as well as the disk tree of the other PC. All you do is cut/paste or drag/drop your files from one to the other. Really fast, easy way to migrate from one box to the other.
The device I snagged at CES only does Win2000/XP. But the new ones apparently support Vista, too, which is great because you KNOW you’re doing a few dozen XP-to-Vista moves in the next few months. And she only costs about $60.
Click over to the SMB IT post if you want a screen shot of the file transfer utility.
