Is it just me, or is FireFox suddenly stable?

By Paul Venezia | March 21, 2007, 7:31 pm

Awhile back, I lamented on the state of FireFox for OS X. It was a resource hog, had memory leaks, and was generally annoying on OS X. However, I just noticed this:

[pvenezia@mb17 pvenezia]$ ps auxww | grep Firefox.app
pvenezia 679 11.6 -29.2 760544 612956 ?? Ss 25Feb07 3898:43.52 /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -foreground

For those like Oliver that don’t know what that means, FireFox 2.0.0.2 on my 17″ MacBook Pro has been running since Feb. 25th. That’s almost a month of constant use, on a laptop that’s traveled with me coast-to-coast and to at least seven states during that time period. I haven’t rebooted the laptop in about six weeks, and I think the last time I exited the browser was for the 2.0.0.2 update. In fact, this FireFox process was first launched a week before this blog was born, I used it to set up WordPress, and I’m posting this entry with it.

I push my workstations and laptops very hard, and I expect that they’ll take the beating, which is why I switched to Camino six months ago. It seems that things have changed, and certainly for the better.

Actually, all shit aside, I agree with you. Firefox has dropped on me twice in the last four days. Just that ‘Firefox unexpectedly needed to close. No other applications were affected.’ error message.

And that’s just on the Mac. I hear it’s worse on Windows.

Ummm. Notice the part where I’m talking about a month-old instance, and how stable it is? After writing that post, I pulled down the latest OS X update and had to reboot to finish it off. Otherwise, it would still be running.

So… yeah. Points on the reading comprehension.

I can’t leave my Vista laptop running like that :(
