The fists of God
By Paul Venezia | March 30, 2007, 11:42 pm
Earlier this evening — well before several Lagavulins with Jon Udell — I posted to my InfoWorld blog about two high-end workstations I’ve been using for the past month or so. I get a lot of “I could build that system for $20 from newegg.com” emails whenever I post about workstations, but honestly, that’s just bullshit. It’s cheaper, but the time investment is not to be discounted. I’m writing this post on my main box, which is a wholly home-grown workstation requiring significant tweaking and specialized aftermarket parts, such as the Zalman heatsinks and a few auxiliary fans. The Sun Ultra 40 M2 and the IBM zPro were definitely more expensive, but if you need a effortless server-class system in a workstation form-factor with ridiculous graphics performance, look no further.
Seriously, the Sun Ultra 40 M2 is the pinnacle of x86_64 workstation design at the moment, bar none.
