Friday the 13th
By Paul Venezia | April 14, 2007, 12:29 pm
My Friday the 13th certainly fit the stereotype. It was the day after I completed the majority of a massive office and datacenter relocation project in New Jersey. 30-something Windows, Linux and Solaris servers, two Cisco 6509 switches, a 4.5Mbit MPLS link, Internet and voice circuits, and around 20TB in four filers had to move from one location to another on the same day. In addition, over 500 new network drops had to be wired into the switches, and an entire VoIP implementation completed.
The new location had been built out over the past few weeks, but all the hardware and network pieces had to be moved and reassembled. From shutting down the servers in the old location to confirming full operation at the new site took around eight hours all told, with only a few minor hiccups along the way.
The morning of the 13th went very well, with no major issues until I upgraded the IOS version on one of the 6509 switches. It was the last thing I had to do, and I started it at 6:15pm. It should have taken only a few minutes, but wound up taking over an hour when the redundant supervisor blade decided to throw a hissy fit and wound up with a corrupt bootloader in the onboard flash. Figures.
I’ll be posting lots on the datacenter project in the near future, but for now you can click the screenshot above for a window into my day.
