You’ll never guess where I’m calling from

By Paul Venezia | April 19, 2007, 2:17 pm

So here I sit, writing a blog post in a most interesting fashion. I’m typing these words into a browser displayed on a NatureTech Note-170, a device that closely resembles a laptop, but isn’t — there’s no hard drive, RAM, or CD/DVD drive. The Note-170 is a Sun Ray client.

Sun’s Sun Ray thin-client platform has been around for years, providing thin access to Solaris systems, but they’ve been making strides in interoperability recently. I’m linked to a Sun Ray SRSS server running under VMware, that’s then linking me to a Windows XP VM running on the same server, delivered via VDI. If I close the notebook or power it off, my session is still active, and I can reconnect to it from any other client. Using SmartCards, two-factor authentication is built-in, and with WiFi, you can work anywhere — even the coffee shop if you have their remote-access piece installed. Better yet, if it gets stolen, there’s no data on the device itself, so there’s no exposure, natch.

I can’t seem to find any technical mention or photos of the Note-170 online, which is quite odd, but I’m going to spend some quality time with it over the next few weeks.
